Lord of the flies

Hi,
and welcome to our blog about William Golding's novel "Lord of the flies". This blog is everything you need to know about Ralph, the context and themes of this book.

Lets start with Ralph, who plays a pivotal role in ensuring that this group of children survive. He is a blond haired child who is declared chief of the group. What do you think Kris?

  1. Hey Anunya, yes Ralph was the elected leader in the novel. I believe the qualities he had were quite suiting for the group's chief.

In the book when the group is having there vote of who will be the chief, when the vote is counted and it is clear Ralph has won, instead of Jack rebelling, Ralph quickly takes charge. With complete confidence he says:
    "I'm chief then."
When Ralph says this, it is as if he is sealing the deal on a large contract. With those three simple words he takes control of the situation and establishes himself as chief.
As i said earlier, it is his leading skills that enabled him to do this. What other personal qualities do you believe he has Anunya?

  2. Yes that is true Kris but I do believe leadership comes with responsibility and I think his other quality is innovation. His quality of innovation does in the end help at least him survive. Innovations such as the fire and the conch are very beneficial to the group.

What are some other innovations Kris?

  3. Yes, Ralph is a boy full of ideas, but he also gets a lot of these ideas from Piggy. As Piggy isn't confident enough to put his ideas straight out there, he passes them through Ralph who then speaks them out loud to the rest of the group.

Even without Piggy, Ralph is still very good when it comes to ideas. One other of his ideas was to search around to confirm that the land they were on was an island and not part of a mainland. In the novel he quotes:

"Listen, everybody. I've got to have time to think things out. I can't decide what to do straight off. If this isn't an island we might be rescued straight away. So we've got to decide if this is an island."

This decision was made purely by Ralph without any help. He shows common sense and responsibility. From this quote it also shows his ability to come up with ideas and put them forward without trouble. Ralph is truly a smart leader.

Apart from his great leadership skills and brilliant ideas, what other important personal qualities to you think Ralph has Ananya?

  4. Another quality of Ralph's is his determination to not give into to savagery because he is charismatic. With that quality he acquires self confidence. Self confidence is an absolutely pivotal to survival.

    What do you think Kris?

  5. Yes, Ralph is a person of principles, and he was always very proper. Even though the temptation of letting loose and turning into a savage was always there, he never did. He stuck by the laws of his tribe and followed through with everything that he said.

Yes self confidence is also extremely important. It was Ralph's fantastic self confidence that made him such a great leader. He made his decisions and enforced them, this was also what helped him stay alive. In the part where Jack and Ralph are arguing, even though Jack is trying to turn the rest of the group against Ralph, Ralph still stands up to him.
"All this talk! Talk, talk! Who wanted it? who called the meeting?"
When Ralph yells this at Jack he is defending himself with pure confidence. He is angry, and it shows. Jack is directly verbally attacking Ralph, and Ralph is dishing right back.

This clearly shows self confidence, another one of Ralph's personal qualities. He truly was the strongest personality in the novel.
